Curbside china cabinet
Denise from Salvaged Inspirations found a china cabinet on the side of the road. "It was in pretty rough shape but turned trash-to-treasure with a few minor repairs and an inexpensive homemade chalk paint recipe," she says. To create this stunning transformation, Denise worked with the intricacy and aged appearance of the original piece. She created a custom wax and paint mixture that gave the furniture depth along with careful sanding to expose edges for a distressed appearance. The free cabinet is a now a chic, functional centerpiece.
Stacked end-table shelf
Beckie from Infarrantly Creative is familiar with turning trash to treasure. In fact, she blogs her own series of flea market flips and calls them roadkill rescues. One of Beckie's latest rescue missions was an end table given to her for free. Instead of restoring it as an end table, she came up with the fabulous idea to transform it into shabby chic stacked shelves. The formerly unattractive table is now a beautiful and functional piece in a guest bedroom. With basic carpentry skills and knowledge of paint finishes, it's possible to transform almost any square table into shelves.
Play kitchen
Kim from Easy Peasy Pie wanted to create a custom play kitchen for her children. She found the perfect base on Craigslist and purchased it for $60. "What I love most about this project is that it really encourages fun and imaginative play," says Kim. "And since this kitchen is built to last, I can pass it on to my daughters to be cherished by generations to come." The dollar store and a recycling center provided hardware perfect for spicing up a play set with real fixtures. The kitchen even includes a magnet wall for displaying art — just like Mom's fridge.
Lego play table
As any parent knows, Lego bricks can become a real nuisance. Storage solutions abound, but there aren't many options when it comes to tables made specifically for playing with Lego sets. Beckie from Infarrantly Creative came up with her own solution — a stylish DIY Lego table crafted from an outdated coffee table. After purchasing the original unattractive table for a steal, Beckie upcycled it into a functional table for her kids. "It gets used every day," she says. Use calming shades like gray to create kid-friendly furniture pieces that still fit into your living room.
Shabby chic TV stand
While bookshelves are notoriously difficult to find at flea markets and garage sales, dressers abound. Most of us don't need a bunch of extra dressers. "I was thrilled to be able to repurpose a falling apart, outdated dresser as a functional TV stand for my family room," says Andrea from Our Blue Front Door. Create your own media center using a flea market dresser and a healthy coat of fun paint, such as the chalk paint Andrea chose. Sand edges and try a tinted furniture wax for a distressed look.
