DIY Whale Art Canvases

I have seen a variety of takes on this whale canvas art around the internet. My daughter really wanted a set for the nursery (yep I am going to be a grandma!). So I created my own spin on this fun DIY whale art canvas. My version is REALLY simple and uses white vinyl. So basically you can whip this one up faster than the paint will dry.

Supplies needed to make your own DIY whale art canvas:

Start by painting your canvases the blue of your choice. The first one I painted with the paint right out of the bottle. I then mixed white with the paint to get the lighter shades. My canvases took two coats of paint each (allow to dry in between coats). Then you will need to trace a whale and wave image with your Silhouette. For the whale, I used this image from 100 Directions. Just trace the lines with your Silhouette software. I then copied the water out of his spout onto multiple vinyl sheets. I stretched it into a variety of different sizes. I ended up cutting the whale and then two sheets of the water droplets.

Now for a closer look at all three canvases so you get an idea of how I placed the vinyl onto the surface.

I really just peeled and placed my pieces. You can use vinyl transfer paper if desired although I did not.

As you place the vinyl pieces, just press down with your fingers to ensure that you get good adhesion. I cut a few of the water droplets and made it look like they are on both canvases. I just did this step with scissors.

This DIY whale art would be adorable in a nursery or kid’s room but it is also perfect for a bathroom.
