Monday morning has never been sweeter! Remember my Upcycled Kitchen Shutters that came up a couple inches too short?! <insert waah wah> Ah… the taste of triumph this morning! I tell ya, these are my absolute favorite project to date! My FAVORITE!! I don’t know if it’s the hours upon hours that the hubs and I spent on them… or the fact that they are just that dang cute! But, they sure make my heart flutter, flutter!
You are not seeing things… I did a total overhaul of these shutters, color and all! We started by tearing apart the shutters, well, not all the way. We just needed about an inch more on each shutter. So, we took off just one board, in preparation for attaching a new board the right size. (Luckily, we had some extra bed slats left over.)
Also lucky for us, we had a new toy to make cutting a straight line much easier than the first go ’round. Allow me to introduce, the Rip-Cut!
I’ve used a Kreg Jig for some time, ever since my brother introduced me to that little piece of genius! But a Rip-Cut? New to me! I couldn’t believe how easy it was to use.
1. Follow the directions on the package for assembling your new Rip-Cut.
2. Attach your circular saw to the Rip-Cut.
3. The Rip-Cut has a handy guide arm that you line up to the edge our the piece of wood you are cutting. Align it to the width you want.
4. Cut your wood as your normally wood! (Only this time, it’s perfectly STRAIGHT!) Genius!
Then we cut a new cross support beam to extend to the length of our new shutter.
We detached the old beam and attached the new one… it fit like a glove. We learned our lesson. This time, we measured twice and cut once.
It really only took about an hour to fix the width of the shutters, so it wasn’t too bad. Once they were rebuilt, we hit them with some paint. I decided I didn’t want the blue shutters. I wanted something cleaner for the kitchen, so I went with a bright white. I thought the black hardware would pop nicely off of the white! It took a couple coats, but I was lovin’ where this was heading.
A light distressing, just on the edges, revealed just enough of the blue and the dark stain to give them the slightly worn and aged look that I wanted.
We opted to do something a little funky with the handles. Instead of the traditional vertical layout, we decided to attach them horizontally. I am truly smitten over these shutters… I couldn’t be happier!
For good measure, here are some beauty shots so you understand why I now refer to them as my Flutter Flutter Kitchen Shutters! I mean, your heart doesn’t patter just a little??
Now to decorate the space above our new shutters… and to replace that light! In the mean time, ahhhhh… I’m savoring the sweetness of Victory!!
If you missed it, here’s how you can build your own…
And if you spotted my super cute Topiary Centerpieces, I made them in 30 seconds! See how here!
